A traditional Peruvian poncho handcrafted by artisans from the "Amaru Network" association of weavers in the community of Amaru in the Peruvian Andes.

Materials & Design

This poncho is handcrafted using 100% alpaca yarn that is undyed e.g. the colors are naturally occurring variations of alpaca hair. Its dominant and largest design pattern symbolizes the four directions, called "Suyos" in the native Quechua language and traditions.

  • Antisuyo - East
  • Kuntisuyo - West
  • Kuyasuyo - South
  • Chinchaysuyo - North

The four Suyos together symbolize the unity of the community. The pattern at the edges represents the plants and it is an appreciation to nature, while the other one depicts the Viscachas, a local rabbit-like rodent. Like most Peruvian ponchos, this is a two-piece poncho i.e. made by joining two separately woven pieces together.

Dimensions

Without the fringe, it is 140 cm long, 120 cm wide, and it has a 28 cm neck opening.

It weighs 1133 grams.

Natural alpaca textiles should be handwashed in cold water using mild detergent. Let them dry on a flat surface so that they don't loose their shape.

About the alpaca fiber

Alpaca is the natural fiber that is derived from the hair of the Alpaca camelid, a species native to the Andes that lives between 3,500 and 4,500 meters altitude. The indigenous people in the Peruvian Andes have been harvesting the alpaca fiber for thousands of years in order to create a variety of handmade textiles. Good quality alpaca produces luxurious textiles that are famed for being lightweight, warm, strong, hypoallergenic, and for having water and fire resistance qualities.
